Einstein's equation tells people that a given amount of mass can be converted into a specific amount of energy -- whenever additional energy E is stored in an object, the mass of the object increases.

For example, when hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water, the mass of the water molecule is a little less than the sum of the masses of original atoms. This missing mass has been converted to energy holding the atoms together in the molecule.
